5-3 Terminology


Blitz: A special play ran by the Linebackers and Defensive linemen. Linebackers will explode through their gap on the snap rather than read flow to scheme.

Divide: A Blitz with Mike and Luke. The Defensive Line will "Divide" away from the ball. The Nose Tackle will go Heavy.

Divide Cut: Same as a Divide except the Linebackers will read flow to scheme.

Heavy: Strong side of the Offensive Formation. If the call is Heavy, The entire defensive line will slant heavy on the snap.

Heavy End: Defensive End lined up to the Heavy side of the offensive formation

Heavy Tackle: Defensive Tackle lined up to the Heavy side of the offensive formation.

Heavy Twist: A twist ran on the heavy side of the offensive formation

Heavy Twist Change: A twist change ran on the heavy side of the offensive formation.

Hex: A stunt ran where the Defensive Tackle on the heavy side will loop outside theDefensive End on the snap. The Defensive End will slant lite. The rest of the line will slant heavy.

Hex Change: A stunt ran where the Defensive End will loop inside the Defensive Tackle on the Heavy side. The Defensive Tackle will slant heavy. The rest of the line will slant heavy.

Lex: A stunt ran where the Defensive Tackle on the Lite side will loop outside theDefensive End on the snap. The Defensive End will slant heavy. The rest of the line will slant lite.

Lex Change: A stunt ran where the Defensive End will loop inside the Defensive Tackle on the Lite side. The Defensive Tackle will slant lite. The rest of the line will slant lite.

Lite: Weak side of the Offensive Formation. If the call is Lite, The entire defensive line will slant lite on the snap.

Lite End: Defensive End lined up to the Lite side of the offensive formation.

Lite Twist: A twist ran on the lite side of the offensive formation.

Lite Twist Change: A twist change ran on the lite side of the offensive formation.

Lite Tackle: Defensive Tackle Lined up to the lite side of the offensive formation

L.O.S. Line of Scrimmage

Luke Backer: Weak side Linebacker. Will always line up on Lite Shoulder of Lite Offensive Tackle, unless walked off for a #2 receiver.

Mike: Blitz where Defensive line slants heavy and Mike blitzes Heavy "B" Gap.

Mike Backer: Middle Linebacker. Will line up anywhere from Nose to Nose on Center to Lite Shoulder of Heavy Offensive Guard.

Mike Lite: Blitz where Defensive line slants lite and Mike blitzes Heavy "A" Gap.

Nose Tackle: Defensive Lineman lined up directly over the center.

OG: Offensive Guard

OT: Offensive Tackle

Pinch: Blitz only ran out of a Double TE set. Front 5 slant toward the ball on the snap. Nose Tackle slants strong. Mike Backer blitzes lite "A" gap.

Pinch Cut: Same as a Pinch except the Linebackers will read flow to scheme.

Slant: Technique where the Defensive Linemen will move toward the near hip of the Offensive lineman not directly in front of them on the snap. ex: Slant strong, Nose Tackle will slant toward the near hip of the heavy offensive guard.

SS: Strong Safety, Lines up on the Heavy side of the formation.

Stunt: A special play only ran by the Defensive Linemen.

TE: Tight End

Tex: A Hex and Lex ran at the same time.

Tex Change: A Hex Change and Lex Change ran at the same time.

Tornado: Blitz ran with SS and Luke Backers. Defensive Line is running a Twist Change.

Twist: A stunt ran by the Nose Tackle and Defensive Tackle. The Nose Tackle will always go first in a Twist.

Twist Change: A stunt ran by the Nose Tackle and Defensive Tackle. The Defensive Tackle will always go first in a Twist Change.
